Stages of Sight

There are many milestones in a baby’s visual progression. Here’s what to expect at some critical stages:

• Birth to 4 Months: Your baby’s vision is improving rapidly at this stage. They should be focusing on nearby objects and faces, and begin to reach for things.
• 5 to 8 Months: A 3-dimensional view of the world begins to form, as does color vision.
• 9 to 12 Months: Babies begin to grasp objects and can judge distances.
• 1 to 2 Years: Hand-eye coordination and depth perception should be well-developed.

As babies grow and develop, you can help encourage their healthy visual development by playing games with them. Use games like peek-a-boo and patty-cake, provide objects that can be explored with the hands and grasped, and play games that include dropping things and picking them up.

How Do I Know If My Child Needs Glasses?

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases generally characterized by damage to the optic nerve, usually by high intraocular pressure.

Pressure builds up inside the eye, damaging the optic nerve and causing irreversible vision loss. Often, the progression of glaucoma is slow and not easily noticeable, earning the disease the nickname "the silent thief of sight."

There are several types of glaucoma. Click on each title to learn more.

Open-Angle Glaucoma

Fluid buildup caused by blockage of the eye’s drainage channels can increase intraocular pressure (IOP) and cause open-angle glaucoma. Generally, peripheral vision is the first thing impacted, followed by central vision.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the space between the iris and cornea narrows, trapping fluid in the eye. When the pressure rises as a result of this fluid, angle-closure glaucoma occurs.

It can appear suddenly (acute) or progress gradually (chronic). Acute angle-closure glaucoma is a medical emergency. Sudden onset headaches, blurry vision, eye redness, or halos appearing around lights mean you should call your optometrist immediately.

Other Types of Glaucoma

Secondary glaucoma occurs when intraocular pressure is caused by eye trauma, injury, or infection.

When the optic nerve is damaged, but intraocular pressure remains within normal range, normal-tension glaucoma may be the cause.

Glaucoma Risk Factors

Glaucoma risk factors may include:

• A family history of glaucoma
• Extreme refractive errors
• Past eye injury or trauma
• Use of certain medications
• Heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure

Cataracts

As you age, the clear lens of your eye can thicken and become opaque. This is called a cataract. They are often the result of the normal aging process, though there are cases where cataracts are present at birth.

Symptoms of Cataracts

Cataracts generally develop without pain or redness. Some symptoms of cataracts might include:

• Foggy or blurry vision
• Difficulty seeing at night
• Seeing halos around lights
• Muted color vision
• Sensitivity to light

Cataract growth can be slowed by protecting the eyes from UV rays—a great pair of sunglasses can help! Eating foods rich in antioxidants like blueberries, apples, artichokes, and dark green veggies like kale and broccoli may also help to prevent cataracts.

Cataract Treatment

Often, obstructions to vision as a result of cataracts can be remedied through corrective lenses. But, cataracts can increase in size and may get to a point where glasses or contact lenses no longer provide the vision you want. In this case, we may recommend surgery.

If you’re having difficulty driving or performing your job safely, are struggling to watch television or read, or are experiencing challenges with daily activities that decrease your quality of life, it might be time to explore surgery.

Cataract surgery is safe and effective, and we will help you understand the procedure and your options.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes the breakdown of the macula, the area of the eye responsible for central vision. Damage to the macula can lead to central vision loss.

The central vision is responsible for reading, writing, driving, and recognizing faces, so any loss of vision in this area may make day-to-day tasks difficult.

People with AMD may not experience any pain or symptoms as the disease progresses. If straight lines begin to appear wavy or your central vision blurs in a way that glasses cannot correct, it’s time for an eye exam.

There are 2 types of AMD: dry and wet.

Dry AMD

Dry AMD is the most common type of AMD, accounting for the majority of cases. It occurs when parts of the macula become thinner due to aging and accumulate tiny clumps of protein.

Wet AMD

The less common type of the disease, wet AMD, is responsible for the majority of cases of blindness as a result of AMD. Wet AMD occurs when blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid into the macula.

Do’s

• Do flush your eye with cold water in the event of chemical contact.
• Do clean your hands before touching your eye.
• Do lightly cover the eye without applying pressure.
• Do seek immediate medical attention.

Don’ts

• Don’t use tools anywhere near the eye area.
• Don’t rub the eye or apply pressure of any kind.
• Don’t try to remove any large foreign objects.
• Don’t apply any medications, drops, or ointments.
• Don’t remove contact lenses (except in the case of a chemical splash).

What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a group of procedures—all just a little bit different—that use a laser to correct refractive errors in your vision.

Technological advances have made several types of laser vision correction possible, but the most common types are LASIK, PRK, and SMILE.

LASIK

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) involves a surgeon cutting a flap in your cornea. This flap is then folded back, and the remaining layers are reshaped with a precision laser.

Once the reshaping is complete, the surgeon will return the flap to its original position, and the cornea will repair itself. Post-surgery surveys report extremely high levels of satisfaction with LASIK.

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) involves the surgeon removing the top layer of the cornea altogether. Then, they reshape the remaining layers with a laser.

SMILE

Small incision lenticule extraction, or SMILE, is a minimally invasive type of vision correction. It uses a very small incision, which can promote faster recovery and may benefit patients with higher myopia prescriptions or dry eye.

Mitigating Digital Eye Strain

Adjusting your work area, taking intentional screen breaks, and ensuring you have sufficient lighting while using your digital device are all strategies that can help reduce digital eye strain.

Ergonomics

Office (or classroom) ergonomics and proper posture can help keep you comfortable while using digital devices. While you’re at your desk, be sure to sit upright with your feet flat on the floor. Your shoulders should not be rounded or hunched, and your neck should align with your torso.

Keep devices at eye level and your keyboard and mouse near enough to prevent reaching.

Remind kids to keep their backs lined up with their chairs, or imagine keeping their backs straight as a tree.

Settings

If you’re reading on your digital device, increase the font size to minimize squinting.Contrast and color tones should also be set to maximize your comfort.

Talk to your child about what font size feels most comfortable for them and help them make appropriate contrast adjustments.

Lighting Levels

The light levels both in the room around you and on your device can help prevent digital eye strain. Turn down your screen’s brightness to match the lighting levels of your surroundings. If the light from the room reflects on your screen, the glare can also contribute to eye strain.

Remind your kids to turn on the lights in dark rooms to avoid tired eyes.

The 20-20-20 Rule
